RegressItMac download
Please read the Terms of Use before proceeding. Also see the RegressIt slide show to get a quick overview of the program features. Then follow the instructions below to download and test the program. The same instructions accompanied by screen shots and more details of features can also be found in pdf format in the RegressItMac installation instructions document. If you encounter any technical problems, please visit the support page for details about how to fix some common issues and how to request tech support if needed.
If you downloaded the program previously, you should update it if your version is no longer current. The latest version date is 2021.06.19. To update your version, just replace your old copy of the program file with the latest one.
To install the program you just need to download the RegressItMac.xlam file. CTRL-click the file download link and choose the "Save as" option to save it to a desired folder. It is recommended that you create a new folder called "RegressIt" to hold all your files related to RegressIt. To run the program you just need to open the file when you want to use it, and click "Enable" at the security prompt.
A new analysis project should begin with a data file containing a single worksheet on which data is arranged columnwise with variable names in the first row. Hit the Select Data and Create names buttons on the RegressIt menu to assign the names, and choose (only) the Top Row option. Then hit the Descriptive Statistics or Linear Regression buttons to get started with your analysis. Complete details are given below
If nothing happens when you try to launch the program for the first time, it's possible that your macro security level is not set properly. On the top menu in Excel, go to Excel > Preferences > Security and Privacy to get to the macro security menu, and check to see that the security level is "Disable all macros with notification". If the program file will not download, this could be due to a security firewall. Try downloading the file in zip format, then unzip it before using as described below. See the support page if you encounter any other issues.
The program contains built-in documentation on its toolbar and in its dialog boxes. However, it is recommended that you should begin by reading the installation instructions and follow the directions at the bottom of this page for running the models in the test file to make sure that everything is working on your computer and to get a quick overview of analysis and output options. If your computer has non-English language or number format settings you may need to make some adjustments. The user manual and modeling advice documents and the pages on this web site provide more details of the many program features and how to best use them. The test file also includes some teaching notes on regression analysis. The videos (on the Videos page) walk through some similar examples and demonstrate the program features. For instructions on how to begin using it right away with your own data, see the get started with analysis page.
If you have concerns about security, please note that successive versions of RegressIt have been distributed to the public on this web site without incident since 2014, and it is well known. Just google "Excel regression add-in." It has been used in teaching at Duke University and many other schools, and it is also widely used by practitioners. Its only interactions with your computer outside of Excel are to place text on the clipboard or write text to CSV files when interacting with RStudio. It does not embed any executable code in Excel files in which analysis is performed. It merely adds ordinary worksheets to the files. If you want to remove it from your computer, you only need to delete the program file. Just be sure that your copy is an authentic one obtained from this web site or another trusted source.
If you try it and enjoy using it, please pass the word along to your colleagues or classmates. We welcome your comments and suggestions at feedback@regressit.com.

Mac program file for Excel 2016 and later: RegressItMac.xlam (version 2021.06.19)
- CTRL-click this link and choose the "Save as" option to save the xlam file to your RegressIt folder. If a previously downloaded program file is there, the new one will have a number appended to its name by default. You should delete or rename the older program file first so that the new one will have the name RegressItMac.xlam. You should have only have one file with this name on your computer at any time, and it should always be the latest version downloaded, to avoid confusion.
- To start an analysis session, open an Excel file containing data on the first worksheet if one is not already open. The data should be arranged columnwise with names in the first row. Then open the RegressItMac.xlam file and click "Enable macros" at the security prompt. You should see a RegressIt tab appear at the top of the file window. Click this tab to see the ribbon interface, and click the "Instructions" button at the far right for details on how to begin your analysis. You can actually open the files in any order, but you will not see the RegressIt tab appear until a data file is also opened.
- If the program file fails to launch, check the macro security level as described above: it should be "Disable all macros with notification." If the file will not download at all, you may need to download it in zip format and then unzip its contents (see the additional links below). If you want to e-mail the program to others, give them a link to this page or the home page, not a direct link to the file nor an attached copy of the program file itself, so that directions will be included., go to Tools/Excel add-ins to get to the add-ins dialog box, and choose "Browse" from there, and go to the location of the RegressItMac.xlam file and open it there.
- If you want to add RegressIt to your list of installed add-ins so that it appears on the menu automatically in future sessions, go to Tools/Excel add-ins to get to the add-ins dialog box, and choose "Browse" from there, and go to the location of the RegressItMac.xlam file and open it there. That should add it to the list, and it will appear on the Excel menu by default in future sessions if its box is checked. Note: if you update your copy of the program, you should replace the existing RegressItMac.xlam file in the same folder. Don't have 2 different versions in 2 different folders on the add-ins list.

A separate version of the program is available for Excel 2011. It has most of the functionality of the Excel 2016 version except that (i) it has only the floating toolbar menu interface (activated by Ctrl-G) rather than the ribbon interface, and (ii) the linear regression procedure does not produce residual histogram plots.

Here is a brief summary of how to download and test the software.
1. Create a new folder called RegressIt at the top level of your Documents directory, then Ctrl-click the file links and use the Save-as option to save them to the RegressIt folder. Then open the test models file followed by the program file (or vice versa), and reply "Enable macros" at the security prompt, at which point the RegressIt tab should appear on the file menu above the worksheet. Click this tab to see the ribbon. Click the "Instructions" button at the far right for details on how to use the program.
If you don't get an enable-macros prompt after following the instructions given above, or if the ribbon otherwise doesn't appear, see the support page for more complete information on technical issues that may arise.
2. Visit each analysis worksheet in the file, click the Descriptive Statistics or Linear Regression button according to the sheet type, and click the Run button to re-run the same analysis.
This can all be done in a matter of minutes if no technical problems are encountered. However, we encourage you to read the documentation, watch the videos, play around with the ribbon interface, and run some more of your own models to see everything that the program can do. And of course, you should try it out on your own data. Start your project from a new Excel file containing a single worksheet on which your data is arranged columnwise with variable names in the first row. Hit the Select Data and Create Names button to define the variables. Then click the Descriptive Statistics or Linear Regression button on the ribbon to perform some analysis. Click the "+" symbols in the dialog boxes for pop-up documentation of the analysis options. After creating one or more analysis worksheets, use the other buttons on the ribbon to navigate and control the display of the output. See the get started with analysis page for more details.

A few secrets that apply to the Mac:
- Do not hit any keys on the keyboard while an analysis is running, because this may cause a crash. Be patient and watch progress messages flash by in the status bar at the lower left corner of the screen. It is OK to touch the mouse while a procedure is running, although it won't have any effect on RegressIt until the analysis is finished.
- If the worksheet or the Excel menu ever freezes at any time, jiggle the mouse or jiggle the worksheet slightly with your finger on top of mouse. It is possible that the program is waiting for a screen update operation to be performed, and this should do it.
- If a crash occurs, it is advisable to restart Excel and back up to an earlier working version of the file. However, it may be possible to rescue the existing file as follows. If a new worksheet called "_running_" appears at the very left (first sheet), delete it. Then go to Formulas/Define Names to look at the list of named variables. If you see any whose names begin with "_running_", delete those by using the "-" button under the name list. Then save the file under a new name, restart Excel, re-load the file, and try to continue your analysis.
- If no Excel file is open but a floating toolbar or other Regressit dialog box still appears on the screen, and you are unable to cancel out of it, open a data or model file and then try to close it.
- If neither the ribbon nor a floating toolbar is visible, but the program is believed to be running, hit Control-G. This will launch the vertical floating toolbar.
- If Excel appears to be locked up (i.e., if jiggling the mouse or moving the worksheet slightly or clicking on a cell or opening a file or checking behind the Excel window for an open dialog box doesn't work), and/or if the little colored wheel has been spinning for an inordinately long time, then you may have to force Excel to close (sorry!) by using the Activity Monitor (found in the Apps/Utilities folder) or by hitting Cmd-Option-Escape. You should save your file frequently, and include an updated version number in the file name when doing so if you have added very much since the last version change, as a hedge against this possibility. Also please note that RegressIt is not super-fast if the data set is very large (tens of thousands of rows or more), so be patient if the colored wheel spins for a while when an analysis first starts running.
- The interface for generating R code may occasionally appear to get stuck, i.e., the R code dialog box may appear to freeze. What is probably happening is that Excel is asking for permission to write the script file. (This doesn't always happen, just once in a while.) Try closing and reopening the RegressIt dialog boxes and look for a system prompt to grant file access.
- See the support page on the web site (https://regressit.com/support.html ) for details of other issues that may arise.
